Stop Motion 1

Stop motion techniques and development.

Techniques

Pixilation
Pixilation is technique used in animation, this technique is made by taking a series of pictures to turn it into a video. Most pixilations are just live actors standing still in different locations/positions but not actually moving. However this is not the only type of pixilation all pixilation is just taking a series of pictures of a still shot and giving and illusion they are moving, kind of like a timelapse but quite a bit different. The video below is a great example of pixilation as you can see it does almost look like a timelapse but not as smooth, this is done by taking shots over and over with the woman with her arms and legs in different places then pillows moving and when the clips are edited together it gives the illusion its all moving smoothly.

Cut out
Cut out is more or less in the name, its "cut out" as in pieces of paper, card, etc. has been cut out and placed on a surface to move, a video below shows you what a cut out animation looks like. Cut out animation is not often used, however it is quite clever when it is used. This type of animation is more oftenly used for artists, as in people who are quite good at drawing, you can see from the video below that this has required a lot of time and detail to form/create. This animation was done by creating a background, that will continuously be still and will not need to be modified at all. The second part of this is creating a series of people, that have to be exactly the same, the body, the head, etc. all have to be the same, all that was changed in this were the legs so whomever created this animation could of cut out the bodies and simply change the legs later on.

Model based
Model based is probably the most often used animation technique in the animation industry, "Wallace and Gromet" one of the most famous animations ever, its broadcasted on TV, and has a few movies alongside it. The name for Model based is commonly used as "Claymation" its the use of clay and turning it into a type of animation/movie, this animation is one of the most time consuming animations, its made by forming together a figure/object as seen in the video below, figures and objects have been made, the bench that the figurine is sitting on. To actually capture this and turn it into a video, you would say move its arms a tiny bit, take a picture, move it more, take a picture, and so on.

Time lapse
Time lapse is the second time consuming type of animation, it may not look the same as the other animations, some say that time lapses are not a type of animation but they actually are. Time lapses can be done in various ways, two of them are, through an app on a phone/tablet/device or a camera, when I say camera I specifically mean an actual hand-held camera, however a DLSR is the only type of camera that can do time lapses which are pretty costly, so an official app called "Framelapse" was made to do timelapses from any Android/IOS device, any device with a camera. it may not capture the best quality but it captures the easiest way for the person using it. A time lapse is a collection of continuous shots, you can set many different settings such as the time it takes and the frames it takes in a certain amount of time. On this time lapse in the video below it demonstrates a time lapse, as you can see it looks sped up but its actually been set in a certain position and left over time to record, with the time lapse mode obviously, this video took 3:22 but this is in time lapse mode, it actually took 3-4 days to complete.

Cel based
Cel based animation is the "Top Dog" of animation, we see it almost every day, well pretty much all children do. Most of you may have heard of Mickey mouse, the cartoon, made by the famous Walt Disney. Cel based animation is cartoon animation, drawings repeated over and over to form a type of video/animation/movie. The video below is a great example of a cartoon, the legs of the ninja are the only thing moving as you can see. this animation looks like a flipbook which is one of many cel based types, flipbook is where you have one drawing and move it over and over as said in the other techniques but you pull the pages of a book and it forms together into a moving ninja.
